The development of a freeze-drying process on a micrometer scale hast not yet been visualized. With a new experimental setup, micro-CT measurements can be performed during a freeze-drying process. For the shown data, a frozen carrot disc was placed inside a round perplex container, which was evacuated through a rotatable hose. The whole container was then positioned in synchrotron radiation in the Topo/Tomo-beamline of the IPS, which enabled a full scan of the carrots pore structure each 5 minutes. Hereby, the differences between ice-filled pores and already dried, empty pores could be visualized. This enabled a visualization of the progress of a freeze-drying process.
